Amara started doing bridal hair at weekends while working retail. Three years later she runs a four-chair studio in the Northern Quarter and turns away more work than she accepts.
Background
Amara worked a £24k retail floor-manager role at a department store in central Manchester. She'd trained as a hairdresser at college but never used it professionally — until a friend asked her to do bridal hair for a budget wedding. She had no business plan, no website and no idea what an SA302 was. What she had was a kit bag, a Saturday off, and a willingness to say yes.
The spark
A friend asked Amara to do her wedding hair for £40. Two guests booked her on the spot. She spent the next six months saying yes to every bride who asked, charging just enough to cover travel and her kit.
First real sale
Her first paid booking outside her own network came from a Google Business Profile she set up in a single afternoon. By month four she had a 6-week waiting list and was earning more on Saturdays than she did Monday-to-Friday in retail.
The turning point
She registered as a sole trader at month 9 after our HMRC guide convinced her she'd already blown past the £1,000 trading allowance. The same month she put up her price from £180 to £320 per bride. Bookings actually went up.
Scaling without overhiring
At month 18 she incorporated as a limited company, took a small studio lease in the Northern Quarter, and hired her first junior. She kept her own diary full and used the junior to run trials and bridesmaid hair on the day.
Where it is today
Three years in, Amara Bridal Studio has four chairs, three permanent staff and a network of two freelance MUAs. She still does roughly 40 weddings a year herself and spends the rest of her time on training, content and venue partnerships.

Challenges & fixes
Problem · Bride had a family emergency. Amara had no cancellation policy and refunded in full — losing the full £320 plus a non-refundable £40 parking pre-pay.
Fix · Built a tiered cancellation policy into every booking: 100% refund 60+ days out, 50% inside 30 days, deposit retained inside 14 days. Now stated on the booking page and the confirmation email.
Problem · Junior didn't show up to a 6-bride morning. Amara did all six solo and missed the ceremony slot for the last one.
Fix · Moved to two-junior cover for any 4+ bride morning, plus a freelance on-call MUA with a £75 standby fee. Hasn't happened since.
Problem · Crossing the VAT threshold meant £320 became £384 overnight. Conversion dropped 14% in month one post-VAT.
Fix · Repackaged into a 'Bridal Day' bundle (trial + day-of + touch-up kit) at £495 incl. VAT. Reframed it as an upgrade rather than a price rise. Conversion recovered in 6 weeks.
The playbook
Filters tyre-kickers and covers the trial chair time. Converts to credit if they book the full day.
Brides book 8-14 months out. Holding open Saturdays is the single biggest revenue lever.
A preferred-supplier listing at one venue drove 23 weddings in year 2 for zero ad spend.
Printed sheet of add-ons (veils, extensions, mum's hair) presented at the trial. Adds £80-£140 to ~40% of bookings.
“I priced myself like a friend with a kit bag. The moment I priced like a professional, I was treated like one.”
“Going Ltd felt scary on a Tuesday and obvious by Friday. The lease, the staff, the supplier credit — none of it works as a sole trader.”
“Saturdays pay the bills. Everything else — content, training, partnerships — is what builds the next year of Saturdays.”
What worked
- Raising prices filtered out time-wasters and improved every metric.
- Going Ltd unlocked supplier deals and made the studio lease possible.
- A single Google Business Profile out-performed every paid ad she tried.
Amara’s advice to founders starting today
- If you can fill three months of weekends at your current price, raise the price.
- Don't quit your job on a good month. Quit after three good months in a row plus six months of expenses in cash.
- Get a real accountant before your second tax year, not after.
- Your booking page is more important than your Instagram grid. Make it 2 clicks and a card field.
What’s next
Amara is launching a bridal stylist training course in Q2 — a 4-day in-person intensive at £1,495 a head, capped at 8 stylists per cohort. Long-term plan: a second studio in Leeds in 2026 and a wholesale haircare line under the Amara Bridal name.
